Knowledge is power and allows confidence in decision-making. And when a parent has confidence, so do their children. The following will hopefully answer any questions you may have. Always feel free to call us for any additional information.
FIRST TOOTH, FIRST BIRTHDAY. Even though baby’s first teeth are temporary, getting an early start on excellent dental hygiene practices will help your child enjoy good oral health for life.
Fluoride aids in the prevention of dental cavities and can even re-mineralize early cavities. Fluoride in our water, toothpastes as well as fluoride treatments will give your child an edge on maintaining their bright smile!
Pediatric dentists continue their education following dental school where they focus on becoming specialists in treating children. Following graduation from a pediatric residency, pediatric dentists are proficient in providing specialized dental care, behavior management as well as safe sedation techniques. Pediatric Dentists like Dr. Bright LOVE working with children!
Your child’s first set of teeth are very important! They aid in speech, eating and also aid in creating a natural healthy path for their adult teeth. Their smile plays a big role in developing their self-esteem.
Dental X-rays have very low risk. Pediatric dentists are especially careful when prescribing dental X-rays to prevent excess radiation when it is not needed.
It is recommended that your child see a pediatric dentist every 6 months to prevent future decay and other dental problems.
Once your child has their first tooth you can immediately begin brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. Until the age of 2, they only need a “grain of rice” size of toothpaste on their brush, and once they turn 2 can have a “pea” size.
Sealants are an easy and affordable way to prevent future tooth decay in a child’s very first adult molars. Sealants work by filling in the grooves on the biting surfaces of molars and blocking pieces of food (or candy!) that can get stuck and lead to cavities.
Try your best to remain calm! If you child knocks out a tooth, pick up the tooth by the crown, gently rinse under cold water to remove any debris, then reposition the tooth back into its socket. If you can’t do this, place the tooth in milk, saline, or saliva (just not water!) and call our office immediately. Dr. Bright is on call 24/7 for all dental emergencies.
Preventing cavities in your child is a team effort between you, your child and their pediatric dentist. Paying close attention to wait they eat, avoiding as much as possible sugary snacks and drinks and making sure they have a clean mouth is a great start. Having regular check-ups every 6 months with Dr. Bright will keep their teeth healthy and on the right path to a bright future!
